‘Mazhakkumundoru Kathaparayaan,’ a book released by the
Communication and Capacity Development Unit (CCDU) under the Department
of Water Resources, seeks to highlight the need to adopt rainwater
harvesting techniques to meet water scarcity during the years like the
current one which witness poor rainfall.
Released two
weeks ago, on the same day the agency began the distribution of a
simple water filter unit called Terafil, each page of the book has a
newspaper clipping, from different dailies. “Stories that portray
success stories of individuals and institutions who have installed
various means of rainwater harvesting methods over the past few years,”
said Director of CCDU, Subhash Chandra Bose. Stories including that of a
doctor who developed a rainwater harvesting unit at his home in
Kozhikode and a successful system capable of harnessing over a lakh
litre of water in Mitraniketan, Vellanad, in Thiruvananthapuram, fill
the first half. The latter half explains practices such as cultivating
plants on a slanting terrain or connecting a pipe from the roof of a
building to a nearby pond as possible means of rainwater harvesting. He
said that the CCDU at Thampanoor, where the book is available, offered
advice and technical support to people on how to install such systems on
request.
The agency plans a study on how those homes with rainwater harvesting units fared this monsoon season.
